Fall blood drive persists despite set backs

The school’s annual Red Cross Blood Drive ended up being a great success, regardless of the obstacles that were put in the way.

The Associated Student Body’s Service and Wellness committee, the students behind organizing and managing the Red Cross Blood Drive, faced some troubling news just hours before the day of the blood drive. The usual location, the Big Gym, had been deemed unsafe and hazardous due to leakages in the roof from a previous rainstorm a couple weeks back. Service and Wellness was made aware of the issue the morning before the day of Fall Blood Drive, after being under the impression that they would be able to use the Big Gym with no problems.

Ivan Fernandez, an SAS sophomore and member of the Service and Wellness committee spoke about the location change.

“We had to set everything up in the teachers lounge and rearrange the entire space,” Ivan said.

The change impacted Service and Wellness quite a lot considering they’d previously been doing it in the Big Gym every year without fail, but they did not let that be an obstacle for their success.

“That situation did cause a bump in the road but we didn’t let that determine how the rest of the day would go,” Ivan said, “It was a smaller space so the service was slower and there wasn’t air conditioning.”

Given the circumstances, the blood drive continued and adjusted to the barriers and obstacles thrown at those in charge or organizing.

“I think that blood drive was the best it could be given the circumstances but we were full the entire day, and we had a lot of people donating blood so it was a good day,” Ivan said, “It was really beautiful, we gave life.”
