In high school, it can feel daunting to step into something new, especially when it involves trying out for an athletic team. For many students, that fear of the unknown can hold them back. But for Janeth, a ninth grader who is joining the school’s soccer team, taking that chance turned out to be one of the best decisions she’s ever made.
“I joined soccer because it seemed fun to try,” Janeth said.
Like many students, she didn’t start as a superstar athlete. Instead of letting fear stop her, she decided to just go for it–and it paid off.
Now, she’s closer to being a part of a team that she described as “a nice environment to be around.”
“[Soccer] is very fun to be a part of,” Janeth said.
For Janeth, it wasn’t just about playing a sport. It was about finding a place where she felt welcome, meeting new people, and growing more confident in herself. At first, she admitted she was nervous to go to practice because she didn’t know anyone. The more she showed up though, the more comfortable she became. She discovered that trying something new can lead to amazing friendships and unforgettable memories.
Her story is a reminder that some of the best high school experiences start with taking a small risk. You never know where one brave decision might lead you. Whether it’s soccer, basketball, theater, art club, robotics, or any other activity, joining something new can help you discover strengths you didn’t even know you had.
Not only can it help build confidence, but it can also give you a sense of belonging. Being part of a team or club means having people who cheer you on, support you, and make school feel more exciting. It’s about finding your community and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.
So, if there’s something you’ve been wanting to try, even if it feels a little intimidating, take that chance. You might not know what to expect at first, but that’s what makes it exciting. Just like Janeth, you could end up loving it more than you ever imagined.
High school is full of opportunities waiting to be explored. All it takes is one brave step to discover something amazing.
